Susana Leiva is a senior vocal major. She will be giving her senior vocal recital on Saturday evening, April 29, 2017 at 8:15p in Hole Memorial Auditorium. She will be collaborating with her brother and pianist Sergio Leiva.
SUSANA LEIVA OVALLE was born in 1992 in Santiago, Chile. Susana began piano lessons at the age of four with Georgina Gonzalez at the University of Chile. At the age of twelve, she furthered her piano education under the outstanding tutelage of Armand Abols at the Austral University of Chile.
She has been studying voice with Dr. Raejin Lee since 2012. She has participated in several master classes under the tutelage of Faith Esham, Fabiana Bravo, Museop Kim, and other fine opera singers. Susana has also studied organ with Dr. Kimo Smith, and piano with Dr. Elvin Rodríguez. She is currently performing with choral ensembles directed by Dr. Ariel Quintana, Sergio Leiva, and Dr. Earl Richards.
Susana is an active performer in the Greater Los Angeles area adn the Inland Empire, singing for many different churches and a variety of philanthropic events. Susana has performed in the La Sierra Department of Music’s operatic and musical productions as Adele in Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” (2013), Hodel in “Fiddler on the Roof” (2014), Lauretta in “Gianni Schicchi”, The Princess in “Little Nemo in Slumberland” (2015), Maria mother of Jesus in “Oh My Son” (2015), and Mable in “Pirates of Penzance” (2016).
In recognition of her fine work, Susana won first place in the Rain Cross Chorale Competition in 2013, and second and first prizes in the Marguerite Marsh Scholarship Competition in 2013 and 2014, respectively. In 2016 Susana was chosen as the winner of the Grand Prize of La Sierra University’s Concerto Competition and the Opera Guild Vocal Competition. She will be giving her senior recital on Saturday evening April 29, 2017 and will also be the featured soloist with the La Sierra University Orchestra on Saturday evening, May 13, 2017.
SERGIO ANTHONIO LEIVA a Chilean pianist since his 4 years old is now a conductor and arranger that holds performance certificates in piano and conducting from La Sierra University. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in piano performance from the Austral University of Chile. Sergio recently graduated from his MA from La Sierra University in Curriculum and instruction with concentration in Musical Education.
In Chile Sergio worked as piano instructor at the Adventist Univ. of Chile, as staff accompanist for chamber music, asst. choral conductor for the Adventist Academy of Chile, and as piano instructor at the Austral University of Chile.
Sergio’s competition wins include first place in levels one and two of the Claudio Arrau International Piano Competition. His varied musical background includes serving as music producer for all music groups at the Adventist University of Chile and for the Concepción Academy Chorale and Chamber Singers. His performance credits include playing for such high profile artists Heritage Singers, Signature Sound, Kirk Franklin and Marcos Vidal.
As pianist and conductor he has performed in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Texas, Washington D.C., Florida, and for the 59th General Conference Session of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Atlanta, summer 2010.
Currently Sergio works in Paradise Valley Hospital in San Diego as Music Therapist. He also works as Music Minister in Loma Linda Spanish Church. And he also is accompanist for the Raincross Chorale in Riverside.
