Pianist Thomas Kim wins 2017 Promising Young Artist

Seven high school students were selected to continue onto the performance portion of the 5th Annual Promising Young Artist Scholarship Competition on Sunday evening, March 13. The following students participated in the event:

Johanna Bazan, soprano

Nicolás Belliard, cello

Hannah Decolongon, harp

Thomas Kim, piano

Emily Pangalila, violin

Isabel Serrano, flute

Solomon Tran, piano

The Department of Music awarded up to $30,o00 in performance scholarships Sunday evening. The grand-prize winner of the $10,000 scholarship to attend La Sierra University went to high school senior, Thomas Kim, of Chino Hills high School. He performed Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23. Second place was awarded to senior Nicolás Belliard for his performance of Kodaly’s Sonata in B minor for Solo Cello Op. 8, Allegro Molto Vivace. And third place was awarded to two outstanding high school juniors: Emily Pangalila (violin) and Isabel Serrano (flute).
