The Steinway Society of Riverside County held their 2015 Concerto Competition on Sunday, November 8 at SoCal Pianos, 74111 Cal. Hwy. 111 in Palm Desert from 1:00 – 4:00 PM. The competition was open to pianists up to age 25. Three talented piano students from La Sierra University participated, and Jonathan Mamora, Junior piano major won the first prize with his outstanding performance of the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, op. 23, one of the ‘big’ concertos of the piano literature. Jonathan’s win adds to his many other prizes, including winning the state concerto competition last year with yet another ‘big’ concerto, the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor. As part of Jonathan’s prize, he will be playing the concerto with the Coachella Valley Symphony on February 2, 2016. Our students have been wonderful ambassadors of the Department of Music, and a wonderful showcase of the quality of students at La Sierra University. We are so proud of their accomplishments!
